 Anaïs Nin, 1903-1977

Anaïs Nin in Cuba.
Description:Anaïs Nin when she was living with Cuban relatives
in Havanna and being introduced to Cuban society.

From: filigree-montage@hotmail.com   (Tue Jun 20 09:59:05 2006)
During this time, Anais was informally engaged to banker Hugh (Hugo) Guiler. (known later as the avant garde filmmaker and artist Ian Hugo) Guiler's parents didn't approve of the relationship as she was poor, Spanish and Catholic and had shipped him off to Europe in the hopes of clearing his head and putting distance between their son and Anais. She spent her stay in Havana at her maternal aunt Anotlina's ranch and spoke of being "transported to fairyland" in her correspondance with Hugo. She sent him sundry letters peppered with clippings from the society pages that described her as an incomparable beauty who had won the heart of all of Cuba. According to her brother, Joaquin Nin-Culmell, she never had any intention of marrying anyone other than Hugh Guiler, but certainly gave no idication of this during her debut, allowing at least one man to propose to her. She let him dangle until Hugo sent word that he had disobeyed his parents (and was subsequently disowened and disinherited) and would be coming to Havana from Europe to collect her. He and Anais were married in the Catholic church in Havana (Hugo had agreed to convert and did) Cuban newspapers noted that the "enchanting" bride had married "a distinguished young American who holds a high position in the National City Bank in New York" offering "the very best wishes for their every happiness" This information comes from "Anais Nin - A Biography" by Deirdre Bair. Anything in quotations is not my wording. This is the story as I have read and understood it and hope that there aren't any gross inaccuracies. ~Ella
